Assistant Cross Country Coach

Brock Newsome

Brock Newsome joins the Salem College cross country program as an Assistant Cross Country Coach, bringing an impressive background as both a high-level NCAA Division I student-athlete and a passionate mentor dedicated to developing runners on and off the course.

A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Newsome graduated from West Forsyth High School, where he developed from a beginner into one of the school's most accomplished distance runners. He continued his academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina Asheville, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry while competing for the Bulldogs' NCAA Division I cross country and track & field programs.

During his collegiate career, Newsome was a member of UNC Asheville's school record-setting distance medley relay team and held the program's indoor mile school record at the time of his graduation. He also ranked among the Bulldogs' all-time top five performers in both the indoor and outdoor 800 meters and remains among the top 25 cross country performers in program history.

His personal best performances include:

  • 8K Cross Country: 25:32
  • Indoor Mile: 4:16.82
  • Indoor 800m: 1:54.21
  • Outdoor 800m: 1:52.67
  • 1500m: 3:56.36

Following his collegiate career, Newsome has continued to pursue excellence in distance running by transitioning to road racing and marathon competition. He has completed two half marathons in 1:15 and 1:14, respectively, and recently finished his first marathon in an impressive 2:51, with aspirations of continuing to improve his performances.

As a coach, Newsome believes running has the power to positively impact people of all backgrounds and ability levels. While recognizing the individual nature of the sport, he emphasizes that the strongest athletes are developed within strong, supportive teams. His coaching philosophy centers on building trust, accountability, shared responsibility, and a team culture where athletes are genuinely invested in one another's success. He is committed to helping student-athletes reach their full potential both competitively and personally while fostering a championship culture built on discipline, consistency, and teamwork.
