WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem College women's soccer (1-7, 0-3 USA South) fell to Regent University, 1-0, Monday afternoon at Salem Soccer Field. After a scoreless opening half, Regent's Sierra Smullen scored the match's lone goal in the 69th minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Salem generated the first scoring opportunity of the afternoon in the fifth minute when
Maria Torres placed a shot on goal that was saved by Regent goalkeeper Kristen Miller.
Kimberly Laredo-Romero answered with saves in the 17th and 19th minutes to keep the match scoreless.
Alexia Valente-Arreola put another attempt on frame in the 29th minute, but Miller made the save. Salem finished the opening 45 minutes with a 4-2 advantage in shots, while both teams placed two attempts on goal as the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Regent increased its offensive pressure in the second half, but Laredo-Romero continued to keep the visitors off the board with saves in the 57th and 64th minutes. Smullen eventually broke through in the 69th minute, finding the back of the net to give Regent a 1-0 advantage.
Salem looked for the equalizer late as
Hallie Kramer placed a shot on goal in the 73rd minute, followed by an
Audrey Monteith attempt less than a minute later. Regent held off Salem's late push to secure the 1-0 decision.
